Alauddin Ali, national award winning composer and music director breathed his last on this afternoon at 5:30 pm in Dhaka’s Universal Medical College Hospital, reports the Daily Star. He was 67 years old.
Dr Ashish Kumar Chakrabarty, managing director of Universal Medical College Hospital Ltd confirmed his death.
He had been suffering from lung complications and was taken to hospital yesterday. After his condition deteriorated he was kept on life support.
In June 2015 he was first diagnosed with cancer. The following month he was taken to Thailand for treatment.
For the films Golapi Ekhon Traine (1978), Sundori (1979), Koshai (1980), Jogajog (1988) and Lakhe Ekta (1990), this legendary music director won the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Music Director, five times. For the films Laal Doriya (2002) and Premik (1985), Alauddin Ali won the Best Music Composer and Best Lyricists awards respectively. He has directed music for more than 300 films in his career. With the fusion of folk and classical music, he created a unique style of his own and has gained popularity over a span of four decades. Many renowned singers of Bangladesh, India and Pakistan have sung his compositions.
Alauddin Ali grew up in a family of musicians. Alauddin Ali was born on December 24, 1952 in the village Banshbari of Tongibari upazila, Munshiganj. His father was Ustad Jadab Ali and mother Zahra Khatun. Ustad Jadab Ali, was a singer of Bangladesh Betar. His uncle Sadek Ali and his cousins Dhir Ali Miah, Mansur Ali, Yunus Ali and Momotaz Uddin were music directors and composers in the 60s.
His family moved to Dhaka when he was just one and a half years old and stayed at the Motijheel AGB Colony. He grew up with his three brothers and two sisters in that colony. He began his music training under his uncle Sadek Ali.
In the year 1968, he began his career in film music. He worked with Shaheed Altaf Ali as an assistant. He worked for long with the renowned music composer Anwar Parvez.
He is survived by five children including singer and media personality, Alif Alauddin.
